Joan B Alexander - artist statement
"Color is one of the great things in the world that makes it worth living to me and as I have come to think of painting, it is my effort to create an equivalent with paint color for the world- life as I see it."

Being a floral designer I am surrounded by brilliant vibrant colors and sweet fragrances throughout my day. It is not surprising that this is where I find most of my inspiration. I love flowers especially their brilliant hues. Their energy and perfection of forms fascinate me. I find it exciting to observe how different petals either capture light or allow light to filter through them. I enjoy closely examining each part of the flower: the petals, stamen and pistils and the way in which they are connected to each other. Sometimes I will take the flower apart, petal by petal, to see how all the inner parts actually interact with each other.
In beginning a painting, I start with the allure and beauty of a real flower that has captured my intrigue and attention. Since flowers fade so quickly, I have found the use of the digital camera to be instrumental in helping me create my art. Cropping and enlarging a digital photo on the computer several times its original size gives me the freedom to view the flowers through different eyes. I can study and manipulate the floral image while exploring a variety of exciting compositional options. I then translate my digital study into a large format painting that comes alive on my canvas capturing the beauty and color that originally moved me. I will continue to reference the actual flower while I am working on the canvas.I enjoy the entire process of painting from organizing the design concept, mixing the paints on my palette (I can never have enough colors mixed) to the completion of signing my name to the piece. I am totally immersed when creating my art. The finished product always surprises me. My goal is for my large-scale acrylic paintings to draw the viewer in for a closer look at the incredible beauty I see every day.My appreciation for flowers is also very spiritual. I am very blessed to be able to work with them everyday and to be able to capture their essence and color on canvas.

Artist Bio
Joan Alexander is a floral designer at Carmen’s Flowers in Exeter,Pa. She attended Bloomsburg University. Joan has been interested in visual art since taking art classes at Old Forge High School. She has been taking studio courses under the direction of Judith Lynn Keats for the past 15 years. Joan’s passion for aesthetic beauty and love of color and design are obvious in her large format acrylic paintings. Joan is a member of the Wyoming Valley Art League and she resides in Old Forge,Pa.
